Patrick Henry would definantly have been on Twitter

If an “armed society is a free society” and “the pen is mightier than the sword”, then the strength of a country’s bloggers might well be the mark of its freedom. Indeed, the measure of a people’s sovereignty lies in their ability to expose the truth and disseminate their ideas freely.

Throughout history the battle against tyrants starts with the spark of a message that ignites the flame of battle and ends in the tomes of history. Wedged between, are countless letters, speeches, and exchanges that provide the lens through which we view and formulate our opinions and reactions. So often, it is the tiny glimpse into someone else’s reality that ends up changing our own.

That concept was not lost on our Founding Fathers. They used every tool at their disposal to spread their message to every American man, woman and child. If they could have, I am pretty sure the First Continental Congress would have twittered the signing of the Declaration of Independent at #DeclareofInd and we might have seen tweets like:

JohnQ: RT @PatrickHenry Give me liberty or give me death
@ThomasJ @GeneralGeorge #bostonteaparty
#continentalarmy #concord

Or maybe:

Towncrier: just heard my friend Paul Revere
raising the alarm about the coming British Army.
Retweet this and meet in the town square ready to fight

While the early American form of twitter might have involved horses and hard riding or shouting from the roof tops, the effect was the same; it shone a light into the darkest corners of the enemy’s camps revealing truths about their motives and plans.

The success of this communication was due, in large part, to its extensive distribution. Think about it, where would we be if our single acts of defiance were not shared? A single spark, no matter how bright, will eventually die if it isn’t fanned and spread by the wind of the like minded. Remember, it was the courage of that one lone student in Tiananman Square that stopped the oncoming tank. But it was the video of that event that sparked a world wide outcry against the Chinese government’s massacre.

Between tagging our photos on facebook and reading Ashton Kutcher’s tweets, social media can be seen as childish and trivial. But pause for a moment and realize its impact. Iranian men and women are broadcasting to the world the truth about what is happening within their borders. They have put their stories into the hands, or rather the handheld devices, of people thousands of miles and centuries of cultures away.

From smoke signals to Gutenberg’s Printing press to facebook, one thing remains constant. The Truth has a persistently stubborn way of revealing itself and that revelation is often our salvation.

Rhetoric meet record, record meet rhetoric.

Alright, this is it. I am putting my foot down and drawing the line in the sand. To all of you “leaders” in the GOP, let me be very clear: Shape up or ship out. Actually, just go ahead and ship out. If you cannot make your rhetoric (the one we elected you on) match your record then please get out of the way.

For too many years you have touted our beliefs and morals to win your elections. Not only are your morals reprehensible, your policies lack all signs and bearings of conservative policy. This is why we lost the election. You didn’t follow through with what you were elected to do!

Normally, when I refer to the GOP, I use the personal pronoun “we”. Because I am a Republican, a part of the collective whole, I will share in the blame and glory. “We”, the collective, voted for you and supported you, so now “we” follow you and call you our leader.

But no more. You forfeit your right to leadership in this party with your actions. This one is on you, “we” will not share the blame.

As a proud Republican I will not let you make a mockery of my belief system any more. I will not stand by and let you run into the ground the principles so many have died for. You seem to have forgotten that, as our last election showed, leadership is a gift. It is a gift from the people that choose to follow you, the people who accept you and place you in that role. True leadership cannot be demanded or taken, it s only given. You have proven you don’t deserve the position and can’t handle the responsibility. So this is it, we are taking it away. We no longer chose to follow you.

Guess what, I am not alone in this one. America is still a right of center country and we will not sit here and watch you wreak havoc on our caucus.

Last month polling showed that most Americans are pro life. That is a right of center ideal.

Americas want to provide affordable, quality health care to their own families without having their choices dictated by a bureaucrat. That is a right of center ideal.

American’s believe we can provide American energy and resources without compromising affordability or quality. That is a right of center ideal.

There IS a ground swell of leadership that will take the reins from you and lead with honor. Here are a few things the next generation of GOP leadership will do:

  1. Say what we really are. Some people may not always like it, but we are going to put it out there
  2. Deal with real issues that real American’s are facing
  3. Find real solutions that work, regardless of who came up with the solution
  4. Respect the American people, even the one’s we disagree with

So please I beg you, step aside, get out of the way, and watch out.
